You can't talk about what a Chinese EV "costs" without talking about insurance, and in Canada, your province matters more than your car.

But the more I dug into the province-by-province numbers, the more I realized a general overview doesn't cut it. The difference between insuring the exact same car in BC versus Ontario can be $1,500+ per year. That's not a rounding error; that's a monthly car payment.
So here's the deep dive. Every province, every system, real cost estimates, and what it all means if you're eyeing a BYD Dolphin, Chery Omoda E5, or Zeekr X.
Why Province Matters More Than Your Car
Canada doesn't have one insurance system. It has ten. Some provinces run public monopolies where the government is your insurer. Others leave it entirely to the private market. A few use a hybrid model. The result is that a clean-record 35-year-old in Vancouver and an identical driver in Toronto can pay dramatically different premiums for the exact same vehicle.
For Chinese EVs, this matters even more. In public insurance provinces, the insurer has no choice but to cover your car, ICBC in BC doesn't get to say "I'm not comfortable with BYD." In private insurance provinces like Ontario, individual underwriters make their own decisions, and brand unfamiliarity can cost you real money.
Let me walk you through every province so you know exactly what to expect.
British Columbia: ICBC Public Insurance

BC is one of the best provinces to insure a Chinese EV, and it's because of ICBC's public monopoly. When you buy a car in BC, you get your basic insurance from ICBC. Period. They insure every vehicle registered in the province, which means there's zero risk of being declined or surcharged simply because an underwriter doesn't know the brand.
ICBC rates your vehicle based on its claims cost group, essentially how expensive it is to repair when things go wrong. New Chinese EVs will initially be grouped with comparable vehicles in the same price range and class. As Canadian claims data accumulates, ICBC will adjust those groupings accordingly.
The EV advantage in BC: ICBC introduced an EV discount program that gives battery-electric vehicles a break on premiums. The discount reflects the lower injury risk data ICBC has seen from EVs in the province. If you're driving a BYD Seal or MG4, you benefit from this automatically.
What I'd do in BC: Get your basic ICBC coverage (mandatory), then shop around for optional collision and comprehensive from private insurers like BCAA or Intact. The private market for optional coverage is competitive, and you can often beat ICBC's optional rates by $200-$400 per year.
Alberta: The Private Market Advantage

In practice, Alberta tends to land in the middle of the pack for EV insurance costs. The province's rate regulation board prevents extreme pricing, but premiums are still driven by individual insurer appetite. Some companies, TD Insurance, Intact, Wawanesa, have been more proactive about EV pricing and are likely to offer competitive rates on Chinese EVs from day one. Others may be more cautious.
Alberta-specific factors: Calgary and Edmonton have higher rates than rural areas (as with all insurance), and Alberta's hail damage frequency is a unique cost driver. If your Chinese EV is parked outside, comprehensive coverage is particularly important here. BYD's aluminum body panels and Blade Battery structural design actually handle hail reasonably well, but that's not yet reflected in the data insurers use.
What I'd do in Alberta: Get quotes from at least five insurers. Alberta's competitive market rewards the shopper who picks up the phone. I'd also ask specifically about EV or green vehicle discounts, several Alberta-licensed insurers now offer them, but you often have to ask.
Saskatchewan: SGI Public Insurance

Saskatchewan's SGI works similarly to ICBC, public basic coverage that insures every vehicle sold in the province, with optional private market add-ons. This is great news for Chinese EV buyers. SGI can't decline you, and they rate vehicles based on objective criteria: purchase price, vehicle class, and available safety data.
Saskatchewan typically has some of the most reasonable auto insurance rates in Canada, and EVs benefit from relatively low claims frequency in the province. The downside? Fewer private insurers compete in Saskatchewan's optional coverage market, so your options for shopping around are more limited than in Alberta or Ontario.
What I'd do in Saskatchewan: Take your SGI basic, then compare optional coverage from the handful of private insurers operating in the province. SGI's own extended coverage is often competitive, so don't assume private is always cheaper.
Manitoba: MPI Public Insurance

Manitoba's MPI system is the most comprehensive public auto insurance program in Canada. MPI covers not just basic liability but also a broad range of extension coverage that would be optional in other provinces. The result? Manitoba consistently has some of the lowest auto insurance costs in the country.
For Chinese EV buyers, Manitoba is arguably the best province in Canada to insure your car. MPI insures everything registered in Manitoba, rates are regulated and transparent, and the province's lower population density means lower claims frequency overall.
MPI uses a merit-based system called the Driver Safety Rating (DSR) that rewards clean driving records with significant discounts. A driver at the top of the DSR scale can pay 33% less than a baseline driver. If you've been driving claim-free in Manitoba for years, insuring a BYD Dolphin or Chery Omoda E5 will be very affordable.
What I'd do in Manitoba: Take full advantage of the DSR system. Maintain your clean record, and your Chinese EV premium will be among the lowest in the country. MPI's comprehensive coverage is good enough that most drivers don't need to shop private add-ons.
Ontario: Brace Yourself

I'm going to be blunt: Ontario is the most expensive province in Canada to insure any vehicle, and Chinese EVs won't be an exception. The Greater Toronto Area in particular has eye-watering premiums driven by high traffic density, frequent claims, and insurance fraud that adds an estimated $1.6 billion per year to the system.
For Chinese EVs specifically, Ontario's private market means individual insurers set their own rates, and brand unfamiliarity hits hardest here. I'd estimate a 10-15% premium over comparable established-brand EVs in Ontario during the first two years, slightly higher than the 5-15% national average I estimated in Insuring a Chinese EV in Canada, because Ontario's private insurers tend to be more conservative with unknown quantities.
The GTA factor: If you live in Brampton, Mississauga, or certain Toronto postal codes, add another $300-$600 to those estimates. Postal code rating is a massive factor in Ontario, and there's no way around it.
Ontario bright spots: The province mandates a winter tire discount of roughly 3-5%, and Ontario has the most competitive private insurance market in Canada, which means more options if you're willing to shop aggressively.
What I'd do in Ontario: This is the one province where I'd strongly recommend using an insurance broker rather than going direct. A good broker works with 10-15 insurers and can find the one that's most comfortable with your Chinese EV. Also, seriously consider usage-based insurance programs like CAA MyPace or Desjardins Ajusto if you're a low-mileage or careful driver, the savings can be 20-30% in Ontario, which is substantial when your base premium is already high.
Quebec: The Hybrid System

Quebec has the most interesting, and often the cheapest, auto insurance system in Canada. Here's how it works:
The SAAQ (Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec) covers all bodily injury through your licence and registration fees. This cost is the same regardless of what car you drive. On top of that, you buy property damage and collision coverage from a private insurer. Because the most expensive component (injury claims) is already covered by the public system, your private premium covers a smaller risk pool.
The result? Quebec drivers typically pay the lowest total auto insurance costs in Canada when you combine the SAAQ levy with private coverage. For Chinese EVs, this is excellent news. The SAAQ portion is vehicle-agnostic, and the private portion benefits from Quebec's competitive market and the province's generally lower premium environment.
Quebec's EV ecosystem helps too: Quebec has the highest EV adoption rate in Canada, driven by the Roulez vert rebate program and cheap Hydro-Québec electricity. Quebec insurers have more experience rating EVs than insurers in most other provinces, which means less uncertainty pricing for your Chinese EV.
What I'd do in Quebec: Shop the private market for collision and comprehensive. Desjardins, Intact, and Beneva are the big players in Quebec and all have EV experience. Mention the Euro NCAP 5-star rating of your Chery Omoda E5 or BYD Seal, Quebec brokers tend to factor international safety data into their assessments more readily than in other provinces.
Atlantic Provinces: A Mixed Bag
Systems vary:
- New Brunswick: Private, regulated
- Nova Scotia: Private, regulated
- Prince Edward Island: Private, regulated
- Newfoundland & Labrador: Private, regulated (with public injury coverage similar to Quebec)

The Atlantic provinces are a mixed picture for EV insurance. All four use private insurance with varying degrees of government regulation, and premiums fall in the mid-range nationally, below Ontario but above Quebec and Manitoba.
The Atlantic region's smaller population means fewer insurers compete for your business, which can limit your ability to shop around. However, lower traffic density and fewer claims keep premiums reasonable overall.
Newfoundland's quirk: Newfoundland and Labrador has a public injury coverage system similar to Quebec's, which helps keep overall costs down. If you're in St. John's eyeing a MG4 or BYD Seagull, you'll likely pay less than someone in Halifax or Moncton for the same car.
Nova Scotia's challenge: Nova Scotia has seen significant premium increases in recent years and currently has some of the higher rates in Atlantic Canada. Brand unfamiliarity with Chinese EVs may hit harder here because of the smaller insurer pool.
What I'd do in the Atlantic provinces: Use a broker. The Atlantic market is relationship-driven, and a local broker with insurer connections will get you a better rate than shopping online. Also check whether your employer, professional association, or alumni group has a group insurance rate, these affinity programs can save 10-15% and are common in the Atlantic provinces.

Here's what I estimate you'll pay annually to insure a typical ~$40,000 CAD Chinese EV (like a BYD Dolphin Extended Range or Chery Omoda E5) as a 35-year-old driver with a clean record, comprehensive coverage, and $1,000 deductible:

Why EVs Cost More to Insure (And Why Chinese EVs Might Differ)
If you've priced EV insurance before, you already know: EVs generally cost more to insure than comparable gas cars. There are real reasons for this, and a few are amplified for Chinese brands.
The Battery Factor
A battery pack replacement on most EVs costs $10,000-$20,000 CAD. Even a fender-bender that dents the battery enclosure can trigger a disproportionately expensive repair, or a total loss on a vehicle worth $35,000-$40,000. This is the single biggest factor driving higher EV insurance premiums across all brands.
BYD's Blade Battery technology, used in the BYD Seagull, BYD Dolphin, and BYD Seal, is structurally integrated into the chassis. Great for safety and rigidity, but it means battery repairs can't be isolated from body repairs as easily as in some other EVs. Insurers factor this into their pricing.
Repair Complexity and Labour Costs
EVs require specialized technicians, and there aren't enough of them in Canada yet. Repair times for EVs average 20-30% longer than gas vehicles, according to Mitchell International's collision repair data. Longer repairs mean longer rental car claims, which increases the insurer's total payout.
For Chinese EVs, the repair complexity question is compounded by the need for brand-specific training. A body shop that's rebuilt dozens of Tesla Model 3s still has a learning curve with a BYD Seal or Zeekr X. This learning curve is temporary, but it's real.
Parts Availability: The Short-Term Headache

If a unique body panel or sensor module needs to come from China, that's weeks of additional repair time, weeks where the insurer is paying for your rental car.
The good news is this is a solvable problem. Every major Chinese automaker entering Canada has committed to building out parts distribution, and the timeline for parts parity with established brands is typically 2-3 years. But during that initial period, expect insurers to price in the uncertainty.
Why Chinese EVs Specifically Might Cost More (or Less)
There are factors pulling in both directions:
Pushing premiums higher:
- Brand unfamiliarity (no Canadian claims history)
- Limited initial repair network and parts supply
- Body shop technician training gap
Pushing premiums lower:
- Excellent safety ratings (Euro NCAP 5-star for multiple models)
- Low theft risk (EVs are rarely stolen, Chinese EVs aren't theft targets)
- Lower purchase price means lower insured value
- LFP batteries (used in many BYD models) are cheaper to produce and potentially cheaper to replace than NMC alternatives
I think the net effect is a modest premium over comparable established-brand EVs, in the 5-15% range, that shrinks steadily over the first 2-3 years and eventually disappears. If safety and claims data come in as well as I expect, Chinese EVs could actually become cheaper to insure than the average EV within 3-5 years.
The Polestar and Volvo Advantage (Again)
I keep coming back to this point because it's important: the Volvo EX30, Volvo EX40, and Polestar 2 are manufactured in China, and they've been insured in Canada without any fuss for years. Nobody asks their broker about the country of manufacture. The insurer sees "Volvo" and applies Volvo's established claims data.
This gives Polestar and Volvo a clear insurance advantage over BYD, Chery, and MG. A Volvo EX30 and a BYD Dolphin are both China-made compact EVs in a similar price range, but the Volvo will almost certainly have a lower insurance premium because insurers can draw on decades of Volvo claims data in Canada.
If insurance cost is a significant factor in your buying decision, and in Ontario especially, it should be, this is a genuine advantage for Volvo and Polestar. The flip side is that BYD and Chery will build their own claims history within 2-3 years, so this advantage is temporary.
Tips for Reducing Your Chinese EV Insurance Costs (By Province)
Here's my province-specific advice for getting the best possible rate:
Public insurance provinces (BC, SK, MB):
- You can't shop around for basic coverage, but you can maximize merit/safety discounts
- In BC, ask about the EV discount, it applies automatically but confirm it's on your policy
- Maintain your clean driving record, the merit systems in all three provinces reward this aggressively
- Shop optional/extension coverage from private insurers where available
Quebec:
- The SAAQ portion is fixed, so focus your energy on shopping the private property/collision market
- Desjardins and Beneva are strong on EV pricing in Quebec
- Mention Euro NCAP safety ratings explicitly when getting quotes
- Bundle with home insurance for 10-15% savings
Ontario:
- Use a broker (not just online quotes), this is the province where broker relationships matter most
- Get quotes from at least five insurers; six or seven is better
- Consider usage-based insurance if you drive under 15,000 km/year
- Ask about winter tire discounts (mandatory offering in Ontario)
- Higher deductible ($1,000 or $2,000) saves the most in Ontario because base premiums are so high
- Check group rates through your employer, union, or professional association
Alberta:

- In Newfoundland, understand that your injury coverage is already public, you're only shopping property/collision from private insurers
The Bottom Line
Insurance is a significant piece of the total ownership cost, and your province determines more of that cost than the badge on the hood. If you're in Manitoba or Quebec, insuring a Chinese EV will be affordable and straightforward. If you're in Ontario, it's going to hurt, but it hurts for everyone, not just Chinese EV buyers.
My practical advice: factor in the province-specific estimates from the table above when you're budgeting for a Chinese EV. Don't use the national average, use your province's numbers. And don't let insurance cost alone determine your buying decision. Even in Ontario, the difference between insuring a Chinese EV and an established-brand alternative is a few hundred dollars per year. The savings on purchase price, fuel, and maintenance more than make up for it.
